iOS 5 May Be Delayed: Will Be Previewed At WWDC, Released This Fall?
Sunday, March 27, 2011
We were expecting Apple to unveil its next generation iOS – iOS 5 at a special event early next month, followed by the public release in June.
However, TechCrunch reports that according to “two solid sources”, iOS 5 will be unveiled at the WorldWide Developer Conference 2011 in June and released only in fall.
MG Siegler of TechCrunch reports:
Here’s what we’re hearing right now:
- iOS 5 will launch in the fall and will be a major revamp of the OS.
- It could well be previewed at WWDC, it just won’t be released then.
- The iOS 5 launch is also likely to coincide with the release of a new type of iPad, which we previously reported on.
- The new iOS will be heavily built around the cloud, and we could see several new services launch from Apple that take advantage of this.
- Yes, one of those is very likely a “music locker” service. There is also a fall launch aim for this, during Apple’s annual music-themed event.
- But much of the cloud stuff will first be talked about at WWDC, Apple’s developer event which will take place in June.
- One of the new cloud service elements is likely a location service that focuses on finding friends and family members.
- As we said yesterday, OS X Lion is still on pace for a summer release — some of the new cloud components are likely to be baked into it as well.
Since the launch of the iPhone, Apple has provided a sneak peak of the next generation of iOS in Spring and released it to users in June along with the launch of the next generation iPhone.
If these rumors turn out to accurate then it would mean that iPhone 5 will be shipped with a version of iOS 4 instead of iOS 5.
We’ll be a little disappointed if iOS 5 will be released in fall instead of this summer but we’re excited about the possibilities of a “major revamp of the OS”.
We’ve heard quite a few rumors that Apple will launch iPad 3 in September but we’ll be quite surprised if iPad 3 is launched this year as Steve Jobs had stated at the iPad 2 event that ‘2011 was the year of iPad 2’, which we thought was to address the iPad 3 rumors.
