One hacker that has experience in breaking the protections of the PlayStation 3 has said that the 3.60 firmware update for the Sony home console seems to make the platform secure again, meaning that those who are interested in homebrew or in piracy need to keep their consoles from updating their firmware.

 

Speaking via his Twitter feed the hacker, known as KaKaRoToKS, has said, “For now, it looks to me (at first glance) that the PS3 has been re-secured, but it doesn't mean it can't be broken again from scratch.”

He adds that he has not taken an in depth look at the 3.60 firmware update and he added, “The epic fail was epic. It doesn't mean they can't come with an epic save.”

The hacker says that Sony has opted to just drop the method it was previously using to protect its gaming consoles and it is implementing a whole new security system that will not be broken until someone takes a good look at it and then finds a new security hole that can be exploited.

The security system that Sony first created for the PlayStation 3 and which remained unbroken since launch to the end of 2010 was based upon a link of authorization between several protection systems and all of them were broken when hacker groups revealed the root decryption key.

It basically allowed hackers and pirates to sign content and make it seem like it was coming directly from Sony.

KaKaRoToKS is credited with creating PSFreedom, an open-source developed alternative to Jailbreak and then created a crucial piece of software for the dongles that were made to break the protection of the PlayStation 3 late in 2010.

Sony has launched legal actions against those who hacked the PlayStation 3 and has sought to scrub the Internet clean of all information linked to the hack.

Rumors suggest that a new version of the Slim PS3 is being prepared for launch with a new security system that makes piracy and homebrew impossible.
